NY Offshore Wind Project Back On Track After Trump Administration Lifts Halt

Equinor's Empire Wind project, a major offshore wind initiative for New York, has been given the green light to resume construction after a temporary suspension. The Trump administration's Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) lifted the stop-work order, allowing the Norwegian energy company to proceed.

A Political Rollercoaster

The project, which is one-third complete and has already cost over $2.5 billion, was paused last month by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, who claimed the Biden administration had “rushed through” approvals. This pause threatened 1,500 construction jobs and significant investment in U.S. energy infrastructure.

Equinor CEO Anders Opedal expressed gratitude to President Trump for the decision and acknowledged the support of various stakeholders, including New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New York City's mayor.

Political Fallout and Environmental Concerns

The White House cited concerns about potential harm to wildlife as a justification for the initial pause. However, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has stated there's no known link between large whale deaths and offshore wind activities. While acknowledging the risk to birds, wildlife conservation groups support responsible offshore wind development due to the greater threat posed by climate change.

A Victory for Clean Energy?

New York aims to source 70% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030, with offshore wind playing a key role. The Empire Wind project is slated to power over 500,000 homes by 2026.
