NY Lieutenant Governor Delgado Announces He Won't Seek Re-election
New York Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado announced on Monday that he will not be seeking re-election in 2026. This decision comes after public disagreements with Governor Kathy Hochul regarding the handling of Mayor Eric Adams's federal bribery case.
Delgado had previously called for Adams' resignation, a stance that differed sharply from Hochul's. Hochul, who possesses the power to remove the mayor, opted instead to work with the legislature to establish oversight mechanisms on Adams' authority. Adams has pleaded not guilty.
Delgado's statement emphasized his commitment to completing his current term. While he ruled out re-election with Hochul, he left the door open to future political endeavors, stating that "all options are on the table".
Governor Hochul's office released a statement acknowledging Delgado's decision and confirming that a search for a new running mate is underway. The statement also addressed the reallocation of responsibilities from Delgado's office to ensure ongoing initiatives are not neglected.
