Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, along with several Representatives, held a press conference to express their outrage.
The SALT Situation Explained
The SALT deduction allowed taxpayers to deduct state and local taxes from their federal taxes. The 2017 tax plan, spearheaded by Trump, capped this deduction at $10,000, disproportionately impacting high-tax states like New York. Lawmakers argue this cost New Yorkers $12 billion annually.
Blaming the GOP
Schumer stated that the SALT cap is an “anchor around the necks of New Yorkers,” impacting middle-class families, and small business owners. Gillibrand directly blamed Trump and Republicans for the cap, stating they need to “fix the problem they created.” She highlighted that fixing the issue only requires allowing the cap to expire.
A Glimmer of Hope?
While Trump might not fully eliminate the cap, reports suggest he's open to negotiation and might consider a more favorable figure than the current $10,000 limit. Rep. Nicole Malliotakis indicated that Trump seeks to provide more relief, understanding the impact on taxpayers.
Calls for Accountability
Representative Dan Goldman is calling on Republican representatives to honor their campaign promises and fully reinstate the SALT deduction. He argues there is no excuse for failing to deliver for their constituents.
