Only 33% of registered voters would re-elect her, while a concerning 57% prefer a different candidate for the 2026 gubernatorial election.
Deep Dive into the Numbers
The poll, conducted between December 2nd and 5th, paints a grim picture for Hochul. Even within her own party, only 48% of Democrats stated they'd vote for her re-election. Opposition is particularly strong among independents (65%) and Republicans (85%).

Kathy Hochul">This dissatisfaction is further fueled by Hochul's controversial support for New York City's congestion pricing plan, which is set to take effect next month. A significant majority of voters (51%) oppose the plan, with a particularly strong rejection from New York City residents (56%).
A Glimpse of Hope?
Pollster Steven Greenberg points out that Hochul's favorability rating did improve slightly from 36%-51% in October to 39%-49%. Her job approval rating also saw a modest increase, moving from 41%-51% to 46%-49%. However, Greenberg cautions that both ratings remain negative, and Hochul has yet to achieve a positive favorability rating since January.
Potential Challenges Ahead
The possibility of a primary challenge from Democratic Rep. Ritchie Torres adds further uncertainty to Hochul’s prospects. Torres has publicly warned that Hochul risks a loss to a Republican in 2026, a scenario unseen in three decades.
While voters indicate a preference for a Democratic governor (52% to 34% for a Republican), the current poll suggests a difficult path to re-election for Hochul. The coming months will be crucial for her campaign.
