New York City Rallies Demand Tax Hikes on Wealthy to Fund Key Programs

New York City Rallies Push for Tax Hikes on the Wealthy

On October 17th, rallies were held in New York City, Albany, Buffalo, and Poughkeepsie to promote the Invest in Our New York (IONY) Act. This act proposes five bills aiming to raise taxes on corporations and high earners to fund crucial programs like housing, childcare, healthcare, and education.

Key IONY Act Proposals:

  • Taxing Capital Gains and Stock Dividends: The act suggests a tiered tax system on income earned from capital gains and stock dividends, with the highest earners facing a 15% tax rate. This aims to balance the current federal approach of taxing wages at higher rates than investments.
  • Taxing Big Business and Pass-Through Income: The act seeks to raise taxes on businesses making over $2.5 million, with those exceeding $20 million facing a 14% tax rate. It also targets pass-through income, which refers to company profits directly distributed to owners or investors.
  • Increasing Income Taxes on High Earners: The act proposes raising income tax rates for those earning over $500,000, with the highest earners facing a 24% tax rate. Notably, the middle and working classes would not experience any tax increases.
  • Taxing Billionaire Capital Gains: This bill aims to impose a tax on the yearly capital gains of billionaires, regardless of whether they have sold the assets. This could generate substantial revenue for the state.
  • Limiting Inheritance Tax Exemptions: The act seeks to revise the rules for inheritance, estates, and gifts, reducing exemptions and taxing wealth transfers more heavily. The proposed system aims to raise significant revenue by taxing large inheritance and gift amounts.

Proponents of the IONY Act argue that these tax hikes are necessary to address income inequality and fund essential programs. They believe that a fairer tax system will lift millions of low-income and working-class New Yorkers out of poverty.

While proponents emphasize the importance of fairness, they also acknowledge the potential economic impact. A recent Siena Poll revealed that while 67% of New Yorkers support raising taxes on the highest earners and corporations, nearly half believe such measures could lead to these earners leaving the state.

The rallies were organized by several groups, including Citizen Action of New York, Open Buffalo, the Alliance for Quality Education, Make the Road New York, VOCAL-NY, and Community Voices Heard.

The future of the IONY Act remains uncertain, but these rallies highlight the growing demand for equitable tax policies in New York.
