NYC Marathon 2024: Defending Champions Tola and Obiri Lead Elite Field

Get ready for an electrifying race! The 2024 TCS New York City Marathon is set to be a spectacle with a world-class lineup of athletes. Defending champions Tamirat Tola and Hellen Obiri will be returning to defend their titles, promising an exciting showdown in the World Athletics Platinum Label event on November 3rd.

Men's Race: A Battle of Champions

Tola, fresh off an Olympic title in Paris with a Games record of 2:06:26, is eager to make history again in New York. He believes the challenging course and enthusiastic crowds in Paris have prepared him for the iconic bridges and cheering spectators of NYC.

The competition will be fierce. Two-time Olympic medalist Bashir Abdi is a strong contender, having secured silver at the recent Olympics. He's also a bronze medalist from the Tokyo Olympics and the 2022 World Championships.

Adding to the drama, three past champions from Kenya are in the mix: Evans Chebet (2022 winner), Albert Korir (2021 winner), and Geoffrey Kamworor (2019 and 2017 victor). Chebet, with two Boston Marathon victories and a stellar record of 13 marathons, is a force to be reckoned with. Kamworor, known for his consistent podium finishes in New York, will be aiming for another strong performance.

Abel Kipchumba, the winner of this year's NYC Half Marathon, will be making his debut in the full marathon.

The US contingent is led by Conner Mantz and Clayton Young, who finished eighth and ninth in the Paris Olympic marathon respectively.

Women's Race: A Clash of Titans

Obiri, a three-time Olympic and seven-time world medalist, is ready to make history again. She is the first woman in 34 years to win both Boston and New York in the same year. Obiri will be looking to defend her New York title, having already secured a second Boston win this year and a bronze medal at the Olympics.

Sharon Lokedi, the 2022 NYC Marathon winner, is also in the race, returning after a third-place finish last year and a fourth-place finish in the Paris Olympics.

The Kenyan delegation also includes Edna Kiplagat (2010 champion), Vivian Cheruiyot (four-time Olympic medalist), and Sheila Chepkirui, who boasts the fastest personal best in the field.

Tirunesh Dibaba, a three-time Olympic and 16-time world champion, will make her New York City Marathon debut. She is joined by Ethiopian compatriot Senbere Teferi.

Leading the US charge is Dakotah Lindwurm, the top US finisher in the Paris Olympic marathon.

This year's New York City Marathon promises to be a thrilling event, with top athletes from around the world competing for the prestigious title. Don't miss out on this exciting race!
