A series of mysterious drone sightings over New York and New Jersey has caused chaos, culminating in a temporary shutdown of Stewart International Airport. This prompted Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to request advanced drone detection systems from the Department of Homeland Security.

Schumer's Request for Advanced Drone Detection

Schumer specifically requested the Robin Radar Systems, citing its superior 360-degree detection capabilities compared to traditional linear systems. He emphasized the need for this technology to address the challenges posed by the erratic flight patterns and multiple drones flying in formation, often confusing standard radar systems.

Governor Hochul's Concerns and Legislative Push

New York Governor Kathy Hochul, while acknowledging Schumer's support, stressed the need for more comprehensive solutions. She advocates for the passage of the Counter-UAS Authority Security, Safety, and Reauthorization Act to grant state and local law enforcement greater authority to counter drone activity, as currently only federal agencies possess this power.

The FBI Investigation and Misinformation

The FBI has launched an investigation, deploying observation teams across New Jersey. Concerns have been raised about the spread of misinformation, particularly regarding claims that the drones originated from an Iranian vessel—a claim that the Department of Defense has denied.

The lack of a drone registration system further complicates the investigation, hindering efforts to identify the drone operators and their intentions. While the drones' purpose remains unclear, authorities are actively working to resolve the situation and ensure public safety.
