Midtown Manhattan's 'The Torch' Construction Halted: What Happened to the 1,067-Foot Skyscraper?

Midtown Manhattan's The Torch: Construction Stalled
Work has come to a standstill on The Torch, a planned 1,067-foot mixed-use supertall skyscraper at 740 Eighth Avenue in Midtown, Manhattan. This ambitious project, designed by ODA with SLCE Architects and developed by Extell, was envisioned as an 825-room hotel with a public observation deck and a thrilling drop ride.

The project, located between West 45th and 46th Streets, bordering Times Square and Hell's Kitchen, had foundation work completed before construction was halted. Recent photos show the site cleared of equipment.

Key Features of The Torch:
- 875,372 square feet of mixed-use space
- 825-room hotel
- Public outdoor observation deck with a 300-foot drop ride
- Lower-level retail space
- Upper-floor restaurant and VIP lounge
- Hotel guest pool deck

The unique design, inspired by the Statue of Liberty's torch, includes a striking 500-foot stem and angular crown. The planned observation deck offers stunning city views.

The project's initial completion date was the second quarter of 2027. A revised timeline is yet to be announced. The sudden halt raises questions about the future of this impressive project.
