Mexican Navy Ship Strikes Brooklyn Bridge: Tragedy Strikes NYC
On Saturday night, a shocking incident unfolded in New York City as the Mexican Navy training ship Cuauhtémoc, carrying over 200 people, struck the underside of the Brooklyn Bridge. This resulted in a tragic loss of life and numerous injuries.
The Accident
The Cuauhtémoc, on a global goodwill tour, was en route to Iceland when it lost power and collided with the bridge. Initial reports suggest mechanical issues may have been the cause, but the National Transportation Safety Board is currently investigating the incident. Dramatic videos captured the moment of impact, showing the ship's masts colliding with the bridge, breaking apart, and sending debris falling onto the deck. Sadly, two crew members died after falling from the masts. More than a dozen others sustained injuries, some critical.
Aftermath and Response
The bridge was briefly closed following the collision but has since reopened. Emergency responders, including over 100 fire and EMS personnel, rushed to the scene, providing immediate aid and safely evacuating the passengers and crew. The Cuauhtémoc was towed to Pier 35, where it remains, visibly damaged. The Mexican government expressed condolences and offered support to the victims and their families. The voyage data recorder from the ship is expected to provide crucial information in the ongoing investigation.
Prior Incidents
This isn't the first time a vessel has collided with the Brooklyn Bridge; several similar incidents have occurred over the years, highlighting the potential dangers of navigating the busy waterway. The Cuauhtémoc's visit to New York was part of the Sail4th 250 events. The ship was slated to participate in a parade celebrating America's 250th anniversary.
