Messi's Magic Almost Enough: Inter Miami Held to 1-1 Draw by NYCFC

Messi Makes His Mark, But Sands Saves the Day

Lionel Messi once again proved his magic on the pitch, setting up a goal for Inter Miami against NYCFC at Yankee Stadium. However, the game ended in a thrilling 1-1 draw thanks to a late header by NYCFC's James Sands in the 95th minute.

Messi, in a display of masterful playmaking, delivered a precise pass to Jordi Alba, who then found Leo Campana for Inter Miami's goal in the 75th minute. Campana's goal was his 31st for Inter Miami, cementing his position as the franchise's leading scorer.

But the joy of the goal was short-lived as Sands, a New York native, rose high to head home a corner kick in the dying moments of the game, securing a point for NYCFC.

A Heated Encounter

The match was not without its fair share of drama. Tempers flared on the field, with Messi appearing to be involved in a heated exchange with NYCFC's Thiago Martins. The incident sparked a flurry of yellow cards, including one for Jordi Alba and another for Tomas Aviles, both Inter Miami defenders.

The match continued to escalate as an Inter Miami assistant coach was sent off for dissent following a yellow card for defender Noah Allen. Ultimately, nine yellow cards were issued, with Inter Miami receiving five of them.

Inter Miami's Unbeaten Run Continues

Despite the draw, Inter Miami extended their unbeaten streak and maintained their lead in the MLS Supporters' Shield standings. They now have 64 points and need just three wins in their remaining four matches to challenge the MLS record for points in a season (73 points, set by the New England Revolution in 2021).

Messi's Continued Impact

The arrival of Messi in Miami has undoubtedly brought a surge of excitement and success to the club. Since his arrival, Inter Miami has won the Leagues Cup and is on track for a historic season. Messi continues to inspire the team with his brilliance on the pitch and serves as a beacon of hope for a franchise looking to establish itself as a major force in MLS.
