Meet the Tiny South American Deer Now Calling the Queens Zoo Home

A southern pudu fawn, one of the smallest deer species in the world, born at the Queens Zoo

The Queens Zoo in New York City has welcomed a new resident: a tiny southern pudu fawn. This adorable deer, one of the smallest deer species in the world, was born on June 21st, weighing a mere 2 pounds. When fully grown, it will reach a weight of only 15 to 20 pounds - about the size of a watermelon!

The southern pudu is native to Chile and Argentina, but its population is declining due to habitat loss and invasive species. The Queens Zoo is part of a collaborative breeding program with other zoos to maintain a genetically diverse population of these endangered deer.

You can now visit the fawn and its parents at their habitat in the Queens Zoo's Wild Side exhibit. There are also two more pudus at the Wildlife Conservation Society's Prospect Park Zoo in Brooklyn.
