Tiny Deer Makes Big Debut at Queens Zoo!
Get ready to meet the newest resident at the Queens Zoo β a tiny South American deer so small it will only weigh about as much as a watermelon when fully grown!
The southern pudu fawn, born on June 21st, was only 2 pounds when it arrived. This adorable little creature is one of the world's smallest deer species and is native to Chile and Argentina. Unfortunately, their population is struggling due to factors like development and invasive species, which is why the International Union for Conservation of Nature has listed them as near threatened.
The Queens Zoo, in partnership with other zoos, is dedicated to preserving these fascinating creatures through a breeding program. Since 2005, they have welcomed eight pudu fawns, and this latest arrival will share a habitat with its parents.
If you're looking for a unique and heartwarming experience, head to the Queens Zoo and say hello to this tiny but mighty deer! You can also visit the Prospect Park Zoo in Brooklyn, where two more pudus call home.
