Mayor Adams' Aide Steps Down Amidst Federal Probe into NYC Migrant Contracts

Federal Scrutiny Shakes Up NYC's Migrant Contracts

As federal investigations tighten their grip on City Hall, another high-level shakeup has occurred. Tim Pearson, a close confidante to Mayor Eric Adams, is no longer overseeing lucrative migrant services contracts. The mayor revealed this during his weekly Q-and-A, stating the change was not due to distrust of Pearson, who is reportedly under federal scrutiny for potential kickbacks in awarding contracts.

The mayor insists that Pearson's work saved the city significant taxpayer dollars, but City Hall officials were unable to provide specific examples.

Pearson's role in managing migrant security contracts has been a subject of suspicion even before the federal investigations began. Michael Garner, the city's Chief Business Diversity Officer, claimed that Pearson awarded 20 migrant security deals in a single week.

An April lawsuit alleged that Pearson, while working for the Municipal Service Assessment, expressed his desire to benefit personally from the contracts. "People are doing very well on these contracts. I have to get mine. Where are my crumbs?" he reportedly said.

Pearson's departure follows the resignation of Lisa Zornberg, City Hall's Chief Counsel, who sources say pushed for the removal of Pearson and Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Phil Banks, both under investigation.

Despite mounting pressure, Mayor Adams has resisted calls to dismiss these officials.

A Cascade of Investigations

This latest change comes amidst a wave of federal probes, including investigations into the mayor's ties to Turkey, campaign fundraising, and potential corruption within City Hall. The probes have widened to include five additional foreign nations, and a pay-to-play scheme investigation is targeting the city's sheriff.

While Adams insists these investigations are not a distraction from the day-to-day operations of the city, the constant stream of revelations and scandal is undoubtedly affecting the perception of his administration.

However, despite the turmoil, Adams maintains he is still passionate about his role as mayor.

"I'm more excited now being mayor than I was when I took my oath of office in the beginning."
