The blaze, which broke out around 4 a.m., quickly spread through a row of booths, charring goods and leaving behind charred remnants.
Extensive Damage and Injuries
Approximately five dozen firefighters and EMS personnel responded to the scene near the iconic Macy's flagship store. Sadly, one firefighter suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to NYU Langone Hospital. The fire was brought under control shortly after 5 a.m.
Vendors Devastated, Insurance Coverage Uncertain
The impact on vendors was severe. Kelli Lipson, owner of Spoonable Spirits, described the scene, stating, "I was like where is my booth, I don't understand where my booth is. It's literally gone." Her once vibrant pink booth, decorated with sprinkles, was reduced to ashes, along with her refrigerator containing her liquor-infused desserts. While vendors reportedly have insurance, the emotional toll and uncertainty of the situation remain significant.
Investigation Underway, Market Future Uncertain
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by FDNY fire marshals. While the southern part of the market reopened on Monday, the extent of the damage to the northern end and whether it will fully recover before the holiday season concludes remains uncertain. The incident highlights the vulnerability of outdoor markets and the potential risks associated with the use of propane tanks, several of which were damaged in the fire.
