Manhattan Congestion Pricing: Get Ready to Pay

Starting January 7th, drivers will be charged to enter the busiest part of Manhattan south of Central Park. This initiative, known as "congestion pricing," aims to alleviate traffic congestion and pollution while generating funds for public transportation improvements.

How Much Will it Cost?

The toll varies based on time of day and payment method:

  • E-ZPass users:
    • Peak hours (5 AM-9 PM weekdays, 9 AM-9 PM weekends): $9 per day
    • Overnight hours: $2.25
  • Non-E-ZPass users:
    • Peak hours: $13.50
    • Overnight hours: $3.30

Motorcyclists pay half the car toll during peak hours. Buses and trucks face higher fees.

Some exceptions exist for emergency vehicles, school buses, and individuals with disabilities who cannot use public transport. Low-income drivers can apply for a 50% discount after 10 toll payments in a month. There's also a credit of up to $3 for passenger vehicles (more for trucks and buses) if you've already paid a toll at certain bridges or tunnels during peak hours.

Taxi and Ride-Sharing Surcharges

For taxis, green cabs, and black cars, a 75-cent surcharge will be added to fares, while Uber/Lyft rides will incur a $1.50 surcharge within the Congestion Relief Zone.

Background and Opposition

Congestion pricing has been implemented successfully in cities worldwide, but New York is the first in the US to adopt it. Despite initial approval in 2019, implementation faced legal challenges and opposition before being finalized. The plan stalled earlier this year due to concerns over cost before relaunching with a reduced toll.

Supporting Public Transit

Proponents argue that congestion pricing will encourage the use of public transportation, thus reducing pollution and improving funding for the city's extensive public transit system that serves millions daily.
