Man Wrongfully Imprisoned for 23 Years in NYC Gets Conviction Vacated

After spending over two decades in prison for a murder he did not commit, Jon-Adrian Velasquez was finally exonerated in a New York courtroom on Monday. Judge Abraham Clott vacated the conviction and dismissed the case after new evidence emerged, including DNA testing that excluded Velasquez as the perpetrator.

The case stemmed from a 1998 robbery of a gambling parlor in Harlem where retired police detective Albert Ward was shot and killed. While Velasquez was initially convicted, advancements in DNA technology allowed for the comparison of his DNA to a betting slip handled by the suspect, revealing no match.

The reinvestigation highlighted inconsistencies in eyewitness testimonies, the absence of evidence linking Velasquez to the crime, and his alibi, all of which were further strengthened by the DNA results.

"JJ Velazquez has lived in the shadow of his conviction for more than 25 years, and I hope that today brings with it a new chapter for him," stated Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

Velasquez, now 48, expressed gratitude for those who believed in his innocence and shared his newfound purpose: to advocate for others who have been wrongly incarcerated.

"Every time I was able to extend myself and help somebody else, it made me feel better and I realized that's where I find my peace," Velasquez said.

While Velasquez was released from prison in 2021 after his sentence was commuted, the exoneration marks a significant step toward restoring his reputation and providing closure after years of wrongful imprisonment.
