Man Killed by Pack of Pit Bulls in Albany, NY
Albany police are investigating a fatal dog attack that occurred on Wednesday evening. A 59-year-old man, identified as James Provost of Schenectady, was found dead in a backyard after being attacked by a group of pit bull mixes.
Police were called to the scene around 6 p.m. after reports of the attack. An officer on the scene witnessed the mauling and shot and killed one of the dogs, causing the others to disperse.
The homeowner, who does not live at the residence, was not present during the attack. The caretaker of the dogs arrived shortly after and assisted police in securing the animals.
A total of 24 pit bulls were found on the property, including 15 puppies. The animals were taken into custody by the humane society.
The Albany Police Department is currently working with the district attorney's office to determine whether any criminal charges are warranted. It remains unclear how the dogs got into the neighboring yard where the attack occurred.
This incident is not the first time police have been called to the residence. In May, a search warrant was executed due to suspected drug activity, and several dogs were turned over to the humane society. The outcome of that investigation has not been disclosed.
The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
