Relais & Châteaux, the prestigious association of luxury hotels and restaurants, is actively seeking to establish a presence in New York City. Currently, the organization boasts several acclaimed NYC restaurants (like 11 Madison Park and SAGA) but lacks any hotels in Manhattan.

Laurent Gardinier, president of Relais & Châteaux, stated that NYC is a prime target due to its wealth and the association's current absence from the Manhattan market. They are actively in discussions with potential properties and have begun their search.

Rigorous Selection Process

Relais & Châteaux has a stringent 500-point checklist for prospective members. While they typically work with smaller boutique hotels, they're open to larger properties (80-100 rooms or more) in NYC to ensure top-tier service.

Challenges and Opportunities

The current hotel shortage in NYC, partly due to the migrant crisis which has repurposed roughly 135 hotels, creates both a challenge and an opportunity. Average hotel room rates have soared to $301 per night (an 8.5% increase from 2022), reflecting a high demand for luxury accommodations.

The city's continued need for hotel rooms to house migrants further complicates the situation, but also highlights the potential market for high-end alternatives.

Ideal NYC Hotel

The ideal NYC hotel for Relais & Châteaux will showcase East Coast character, complementing the city's culinary scene while also maintaining the association's high standards of luxury and service. They are currently targeting an existing luxury hotel in Manhattan.

Relais & Châteaux already has several properties outside of Manhattan, such as the Bedford Post Inn, co-owned by Richard Gere and Russell Hernandez.
