J'ouvert in Brooklyn: Music, Dance, and Tight Security at Caribbean Carnival Kick-off

J'ouvert Celebration Kicks Off Brooklyn's Caribbean Carnival

The vibrant J'ouvert celebration, a traditional pre-dawn carnival event, took place in Brooklyn early Monday morning, setting the stage for the main New York Caribbean Carnival festivities.

With a heavy emphasis on safety, the NYPD established numerous security checkpoints throughout the parade route, ensuring a secure environment for both participants and spectators. Over 300 security wands were utilized to thoroughly check each individual.

The energy was palpable as the celebration unfolded. Music from DJs, calypso bands, and soca bands filled the air. Revelers danced and painted their bodies, embracing the vibrant spirit of the Caribbean culture.

The festivities culminated in the grand New York Caribbean Carnival parade, a colorful spectacle of steel-pan and calypso bands adorned in elaborate costumes. The parade marched along Eastern Parkway, drawing thousands of spectators to Grand Army Plaza.
