Jimmy Carter's Unexpected NYC Legacy: A Habitat for Humanity Triumph
Former President Jimmy Carter's dedication to Habitat for Humanity began in NYC in 1984, with the renovation of the Mascot Flats building on the Lower East Side. This project, where Carter spent a week working alongside volunteers, resulted in 19 families achieving homeownership for the first time.
Irene Arroyo, one of the new homeowners, expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity. Rob Derocker, a fellow volunteer, recalled Carter's unwavering work ethic, noting he was always the first to arrive and the last to leave.
A Lasting Partnership
This NYC project marked the start of a decades-long partnership between Carter, his wife Rosalynn, and Habitat for Humanity. Together, they collaborated with over 100,000 volunteers, building, renovating, and repairing more than 4,000 homes across the country. Carter's involvement significantly boosted Habitat for Humanity's recognition and impact.
Sabrina Lippman of Habitat for Humanity NYC and Westchester County lauded Carter as a passionate champion of affordable housing and humanitarian causes.
Remembering a Legacy
To honor Carter's contributions, Habitat for Humanity plans to install signage at Mascot Flats, inviting supporters to pay tribute.
