Jets Lose Key Defensive Player to Potential Achilles Tear
The New York Jets suffered a major blow during their Week 2 victory over the Tennessee Titans, as defensive end Jermaine Johnson was carted off the field with a suspected torn right Achilles tendon. Coach Robert Saleh confirmed that it's "looking like" Johnson will be lost for the season, pending an MRI on Monday.
Johnson, a key part of the Jets' young defensive core, made the Pro Bowl last season as an injury replacement. His absence puts further pressure on the Jets to resolve the contract situation with edge rusher Haason Reddick, who is currently holding out.
The injury occurred in the third quarter while Johnson was pass rushing Will Levis. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who tore his own Achilles last season, expressed his concern for Johnson, saying "my heart kind of dropped a little bit" when he saw the injury.
Despite the loss of Johnson, the Jets' defense managed to limit the Titans to just seven points in the second half, thanks in part to a strong performance from Will McDonald, who recorded three sacks. The Jets will hope that McDonald and other defensive players can step up to fill the void left by Johnson.
The Jets also dealt with other injuries during the game, with linebacker C.J. Mosley leaving with a toe injury and cornerback D.J. Reed sidelined due to a knee injury.
The Jets will now look to bounce back from this setback as they face the New England Patriots on Thursday night.
