Whale Watch in NYC: A Rare Sighting Under the Brooklyn Bridge!

New Yorkers were treated to an incredible sight on Monday: a whale swimming under the iconic Brooklyn Bridge! The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed the sighting, though the whale's species remains unconfirmed, it could be either a humpback whale or an endangered North Atlantic right whale.

Footage shows the whale spouting water near the bridge, leaving onlookers amazed. While humpback whale sightings are more common, the event is still considered unusual, especially given the recent sightings of over 80 North Atlantic right whales off Long Island this summer.

Gotham Whale, a marine life tracking organization, noted that the whale's presence in the area is not fully confirmed due to busy holiday travel, there's still a possibility it remains near NYC. They also reported a mother and calf humpback whale sighting near Spring Lake, New Jersey the previous day. The organization urges the public to maintain a safe distance of at least 100 feet from all whales, especially mothers and calves.

This isn't the first time whales have been spotted near NYC. In 2020, a humpback whale was seen in the Hudson River, and sadly, 13 dead whales were found along the New York and New Jersey shorelines between December 2022 and February 2023.

A Reminder of NYC's Marine Life

The sighting serves as a striking reminder of the rich marine life that coexists with the bustling city, even under one of the world's most famous bridges. The event highlights the need for careful observation and respect for these magnificent creatures.
