Mangione faces charges including murder, as well as weapons and forgery charges. A three-page handwritten document allegedly detailing his motive was recovered. The document criticized healthcare companies, specifically mentioning UnitedHealthcare, for prioritizing profits over patient care. Police say the document did not target other individuals.
"It does seem he has some ill will toward corporate America," said NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny.
The document contained the statement: "I do apologize for any strife or traumas but it had to be done. Frankly, these parasites simply had it coming."
The Crime and Aftermath
Thompson was shot in the back on December 4th while on his way to an investors' conference. The subsequent manhunt spanned the East Coast, leading to Mangione's arrest. The killing prompted safety concerns across the healthcare industry, with several companies temporarily closing offices.
