Horrific NYC Stabbing: 14-Year-Old Killed in Senseless Attack

A 14-year-old boy, Caleb Rios, was fatally stabbed in the Bronx last week while walking to school. The NYPD arrested 29-year-old Waldo Mejia, described as a "violent recidivist" with a history of mental health issues and prior arrests, in connection with the attack.

A Random Act of Violence

Authorities called the attack senseless and unprovoked. According to police, surveillance footage shows Mejia approaching Caleb on the sidewalk and stabbing him in the chest. Caleb suffered stab wounds to the heart and lungs. Despite bystanders' efforts to help and get him to a hospital, Caleb sadly succumbed to his injuries.

Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark described the killing as "unfathomable" and expressed condolences to Caleb's family. She shared the heartbreaking account of Caleb's last moments, recounting his desperate call to his father.

The Suspect: A History of Violence

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch identified Mejia as a career criminal with prior arrests, including one for stabbing a neighbor's Ring camera just weeks before Caleb's murder. Mejia was released on his own recognizance following this prior arrest. The NYPD's statement on X highlighted the systemic failures in dealing with repeat offenders and individuals with severe mental health issues.

Mejia was found at his home, approximately 750 feet from the crime scene, with the bloody murder weapon and clothing matching that seen in the surveillance footage. He remains jailed without bond on murder, manslaughter, and weapons charges.

A Troubling Pattern

Mejia's arrest history reveals a disturbing pattern of violent behavior:

  • November 27, 2024: Stabbed a neighbor's Ring camera; released on his own recognizance.
  • 2019: Arrested for burglary and arson.
  • 2017: Arrested for possession of a loaded 9mm gun.
  • 2015: Arrested for possession of a knife.

This tragic incident underscores serious concerns about the city's handling of repeat offenders and individuals with mental health challenges. The investigation continues, and Mejia awaits court proceedings.
