A devastating accident occurred early Saturday morning in Manhattan's Chinatown. A car, a blue Chevrolet Malibu, jumped the curb at the intersection of Canal Street and the Bowery, striking and killing a cyclist (a man in his 30s) and a pedestrian (a woman in her 60s).

The Aftermath

The driver and passenger of the Malibu, both women in their 20s, fled the scene but were apprehended a block away. The car sustained significant damage, as did an unoccupied police van it also collided with. The scene showed a significant amount of debris scattered around, including a damaged metal bench.

The Bowery was temporarily closed as police investigated the scene. A maintenance worker highlighted that accidents at this location were not uncommon, citing the speed of cars exiting the Manhattan Bridge.

Citywide Statistics

Despite this tragic incident, the city has seen a decrease in traffic fatalities. According to the Department of Transportation, pedestrian deaths are down 19% in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period last year (from 63 to 51), and cyclist deaths on traditional bicycles are at a record low of one (compared to 3 in the first half of 2024, 6 in 2023, and 11 in 2019). Overall traffic fatalities citywide are down 32%.
