Hochul to the Rescue? How NY Gov Can Step Up As Adams Faces Legal Troubles

Hochul's Time to Shine: Filling the Power Vacuum Left by Adams' Legal Troubles
With Mayor Adams facing federal charges, New York City is effectively mayor-less. Governor Hochul needs to step up and fill the power vacuum to address critical issues facing the city.
The Migrant Crisis and Budget Concerns
Hochul should take a more proactive role in managing the city's migrant crisis. The state's constitution mandates providing shelter, but Hochul has simply thrown money at the problem. Instead, she can push for legislation to define who is eligible for shelter and how long they can stay, and she can leverage state funding to close down problematic shelter hotels.
The governor also has the power to influence the city's budget. She can use her authority over the Financial Control Board to ensure that neither Adams nor his potential replacement throws a reckless spending spree.
Subway Safety and State Control
Hochul can also address the growing issue of subway safety. Although the mayor controls the NYPD, the governor has leverage over state-controlled subway systems. She should request a report on the number of officers needed to keep the subways safe and explore ways to improve criminal justice and mental health systems to support police efforts.
A Time for Action
New York City cannot afford to be without a functioning mayor, and Governor Hochul has the power to step in and take charge. The city needs a strong governor to guide it through this turbulent period.
