Historic Women's Residence Finds a New Home in Brooklyn

The Webster Apartments, a century-old nonprofit providing affordable housing for women, has reopened in Downtown Brooklyn after relocating from Manhattan.

This marks a revival of a unique housing model that was prevalent in the early 20th century, offering a vital resource in today's challenging NYC housing market.

Affordable and Convenient Living for Women

The Webster offers shared rooms and studios, with monthly rates starting at $2,000 and $2,800 respectively. Discounts are available for early sign-ups. The residence accommodates around 150 women, offering stays ranging from four weeks to five years. This is significantly more affordable than comparable options in the area, as studios in the neighborhood average $3,540, according to Rent Hop.

A Legacy of Support for Working Women

Founded in 1923 thanks to a donation by Macy's executive Charles Webster, the residence initially housed women working at the nearby Macy's Herald Square. Its establishment reflects the unique challenges faced by women in the early 20th century, balancing work and independent living in a rapidly changing city.

"Having been engaged for many years in the business known as a department store in the City of New York, and having employed a large number of unmarried women in that business, I have realized that the domestic environments of many of them are not conducive to their morals or health," Charles Webster wrote in his will, outlining his vision.

The Webster's reopening offers a modern iteration of this historical legacy, providing a supportive and affordable community for women navigating life in New York City.
