NYC's Smile Center Shuts Down: A Heartbreaking Loss for Special Needs Children
The Smile Center, a cherished Manhattan sensory gym offering free after-school therapy to preschool-age children with special needs, has unexpectedly closed its doors. This follows the tragic and sudden death of its director, Huck Ho, from a heart attack at age 56.
The closure leaves dozens of families devastated, as the Smile Center was one of only two facilities in Manhattan accepting city Department of Education vouchers for free therapy. Parents now face a struggle to find comparable affordable options.
Limited Alternatives and High Demand
Making Milestones, another facility accepting these vouchers, is now overwhelmed with requests from former Smile Center families. A representative stated their waiting list is already several pages long.
Private therapy sessions can cost hundreds of dollars, placing an immense financial burden on families.
The DOE's Response and SEED Program
The Department of Education (DOE) assures it is working to help affected families access needed services. They highlight the existence of over 80 SEED (Exploration, Education, and Discovery) sites across the five boroughs offering similar free services. However, some parents express unfamiliarity with the SEED program or find the locations inconvenient.
While SEED offers free therapy, there are limitations: participants are capped at 12 sessions yearly, and a caregiver must remain present for each session.
The Smile Center's future remains uncertain. Staff members express deep concern over the loss of this unique and valuable resource for NYC's special needs community.
