Hate Crimes in New York Surge to a 20-Year High: Religion is the Leading Motive

Hate Crimes Soar in New York, With Religion as the Primary Motive

New York state experienced a significant rise in hate crimes in 2023, with the number reaching the highest level in over two decades. According to a report by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli, there were 1,089 reported hate crimes across the state, representing a 69% increase since 2019.

A concerning trend: The report highlights a disturbing increase in hate crimes targeting specific groups, including Jewish and Muslim New Yorkers, Black people, and gay men.

Religion at the forefront: The report emphasizes that religion is the most common bias motivation for these hate crimes. This spike in religiously motivated hate crimes can be partially attributed to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

A look at the numbers:

• Hate crimes against Jewish New Yorkers surged by 89%.
• Hate crimes targeting Muslims more than doubled.

Beyond reported crimes: The report emphasizes that these numbers only reflect reported hate crimes. Many incidents likely go unreported due to fear of retaliation, language barriers, or mistrust in law enforcement.

Addressing the problem: DiNapoli emphasizes the need for greater acceptance and tolerance at all levels of society. He calls on elected officials, community organizations, religious institutions, and schools to play a crucial role in promoting understanding and inclusivity.

Support and resources: The state has included funding in its 2025 budget to improve reporting mechanisms for victims of hate crimes, enhance security measures for vulnerable groups, and provide support services to organizations working to combat hate crimes.
