Harvey Weinstein Sues NYC for $5 Million Over 'Deplorable' Rikers Island Conditions

Harvey Weinstein's $5 Million Lawsuit Against NYC Over Rikers Island

Convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein is suing New York City for $5 million, claiming deplorable conditions at Rikers Island jail. His lawyer, Imran H. Ansari, describes finding Weinstein with blood spatter on his clothes, unwashed garments, and no clean underwear.

Ansari stated that the conditions amounted to cruel and unusual punishment, violating Weinstein's constitutional rights and falling below the standard of care for medical professionals. The lawsuit cites negligence, recklessness, and deprivation of medical treatment.

This lawsuit comes as a federal judge ruled NYC in contempt for failing to address the violence at Rikers Island, potentially leading to federal oversight of the facility. Despite plans to close Rikers by 2027, its future remains uncertain.

Weinstein's attorney's full statement:

"Harvey Weinstein has suffered considerably from the deplorable conditions on Rikers Island. ... When I last visited him, I found him with blood spatter on his prison garb, possibly from IV’s, clothes that had not been washed for weeks, and he had not even been provided clean underwear – hardly sanitary conditions for someone with severe medical conditions and susceptibility to illness. ... The treatment, or lack thereof, that Mr. Weinstein is receiving on Rikers Island does not only amount to medical negligence, it amounts to cruel and unusual punishment in violation of the Eighth Amendment."

The city of New York has yet to respond to the lawsuit.
