Harlem Boy's Death: Father Arrested, Mother Charged in NYC Malnourishment Case
The father of a 4-year-old boy found dead in his Harlem apartment has been arrested, following the arrest of his mother earlier. Laron Modlin, 25, is facing charges in connection with the death of Jahmeik Modlin, who was found unresponsive on Sunday. The medical examiner will determine the cause of death, but authorities suspect malnourishment played a role.
The boy's mother, Nytavia Ragsdale, 26, was previously charged with criminally negligent homicide and endangering the welfare of a child. Neighbors reported never seeing the children and described Ragsdale as rarely wearing clean clothes and appearing to struggle financially.
Erica Speed, a resident of the building, said, "I never see them go to school… I never see her take them out. I don’t even see her grocery shop, to be honest. She had on the same outfit basically for like two years. I tried to offer her clothes, her pride is too — I don’t know. She ain’t never want the help.”
The Administration for Children's Services (ACS) is investigating the incident, and the NYPD has taken the three other children, all under the age of 10, into custody.
Dr. Iesha Sekou, the CEO of Street Corner Resources, said, "Sometimes there’s trauma we see and don’t see…so neighbors, people like that, need to check on each other, whether you know the person or not." This tragedy highlights the importance of community support and awareness of potential child endangerment situations.
This case underscores the tragic consequences of child neglect and the need for increased awareness and resources to protect vulnerable children.
