Flash Floods & Mudslides Hit Connecticut, New York City Braces for More Rain

Heavy Rainfall Causes Chaos in Connecticut and New York City

Heavy rainfall in southwestern Connecticut on Sunday, August 18, 2024, caused severe flash flooding, mudslides, and washed-out roads. The National Weather Service declared a flash flood emergency or flash flood warning for parts of Fairfield, New Haven, Litchfield, and Hartford Counties.

Emergency crews carried out widespread water rescues, particularly in the Southbury area, where several mudslides were reported.

New York City Also Experiences Heavy Rain

New York City also experienced heavy rain on Sunday evening, causing all major airports in the region to ground flights. Officials warned of potentially damaging wind gusts. Flash flood warnings were issued in Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island, and several counties north and west of New York City.

Transportation Disruptions

Amtrak and New Jersey Transit temporarily suspended all trains between New York and Philadelphia due to flooding. Major roadways in the New York City area were also blocked due to flooding, including parts of Harlem River Drive, Major Deegan Expressway, and Long Island Expressway.

Heroic Rescues Amidst the Chaos

In Southbury, a man swam to a car submerged in floodwaters and rescued the driver. He also retrieved the man's prosthetic leg and his golden retriever. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of flash flooding and the importance of staying informed during severe weather events.

Weather Phenomenon and Future Outlook

The National Weather Service attributed the severe rainfall to a weather phenomenon known as a training thunderstorm, where a thunderstorm repeatedly reforms over the same area. While this is common in the summer, the heavy rainfall experienced was unexpected. Officials urged residents to stay alert and heed warnings from local authorities.
