Fed-Up New Yorkers Demand Closure of Massive Migrant Shelter: 'It's Affecting Everyone'

New Yorkers Protest Against Migrant Shelter at Floyd Bennett Field

Frustrated residents gathered outside Brooklyn's Floyd Bennett Field on Sunday, demanding the closure of a massive migrant shelter at the site. The protest came as the city faces a decision on whether to renew the lease for the 2,000-bed facility, which is set to expire on September 14.

The demonstrators, who included elected officials, veterans, and concerned citizens, voiced their concerns about the shelter's impact on their community. They cited incidents of crime, including theft, solicitation, and assault, which they attribute to the presence of migrants at the shelter.

Assemblywoman Jaime Williams, representing the district, criticized the shelter's location, calling it a flood zone with no infrastructure. She expressed concern that without employment opportunities, migrants would be left with no options but to roam the streets.

Antonia Natal, a longtime resident, acknowledged the importance of immigration but stressed the need for legal entry and a responsible approach to housing migrants. She argued that the influx of undocumented individuals would negatively affect the city's economy and housing market.

Navy veteran Martin Vezzuto was more blunt, stating that the situation was “all bulls–t.”

Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels, highlighted the financial burden on taxpayers to accommodate the large number of migrants. He also criticized the alleged immunity of illegal immigrants from legal consequences.

The Floyd Bennett Field shelter is just one of many facilities throughout the city converted to house the thousands of migrants arriving in New York since 2022. The influx has overwhelmed the city's resources, leading to tension and resentment among some residents.

The city is expected to make a decision on renewing the lease for the Floyd Bennett Field shelter soon. The outcome will have a significant impact on both the migrant population and the surrounding community.
