FBI Raids Homes of NYC Mayor Eric Adams' Top Aides: What We Know So Far
Federal agents have raided the homes of two high-ranking officials within New York City Mayor Eric Adams' administration, raising eyebrows and sparking questions about the nature of the investigation.
The raids, which took place early Wednesday, targeted Sheena Wright, the city's First Deputy Mayor, and Philip Banks III, the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety. Agents reportedly confiscated phones and laptops from both officials.
While the purpose of the raid remains unclear, it's the latest in a series of federal investigations targeting Adams and his inner circle. In November 2023, agents raided the home of Brianna Suggs, Adams' top campaign fundraiser, and seized phones and an iPad belonging to the mayor himself.
This investigation reportedly revolves around whether Adams's 2021 mayoral campaign “conspired with the Turkish government and others to funnel money into its coffers”.
Banks, who previously served as the New York Police Department's Chief of Department, resigned in 2014 amidst a federal bribery investigation. Agents uncovered evidence that he had accepted thousands of dollars in free meals and sports tickets.
The timing of the raids is particularly noteworthy, coming just days after New York City schools reopened. David Banks, the fiance of Sheena Wright and brother of Philip Banks, is the current Schools Chancellor appointed by Adams.
Adams has faced criticism for appointing close friends and allies to top positions in his administration. This includes Lisa White, a longtime friend who was hired as the NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner for Employee Relations.
The mayor has also been under fire for his handling of various issues, including his opposition to a ban on solitary confinement, rising complaints against the NYPD under his leadership, and controversial remarks about asylum seekers. In March, Adams was accused in a lawsuit of sexual assault. He has denied the accusations.
The FBI has not yet released a statement regarding the raid. Adams's office has also declined to comment.
