Double Shooting Near Gracie Mansion: Murder-Suicide Leaves One Child Unharmed

Two women were found dead on the Upper East Side Friday morning in what police are calling an apparent murder-suicide. The shooting occurred just yards from Gracie Mansion, the official residence of New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

According to police, one woman shot the other on East 88th Street near York Avenue around 8:50 a.m. before turning the gun on herself. The incident happened in a car parked on the street, with a young child in the backseat who was thankfully unharmed.

The shooting prompted a rapid response from NYPD officers, including those assigned to the Mayor's protective detail, who were already stationed near Gracie Mansion. Mayor Adams himself arrived at the scene within minutes.

Witnesses

Michael Donovan, a superintendent of an East 88th Street building, described the horrifying scene. He heard the gunshots and witnessed one of the women falling to the sidewalk. He then saw the other woman lying behind the car. Donovan also noticed a child in the backseat and immediately called 911.

Investigation

One woman died at the scene, while the second was taken to a local hospital but did not survive. The investigation into the double shooting is ongoing, with police yet to release the identities of the victims.

Donovan, who described the block as generally safe and quiet, expressed shock at the incident. "It's shocking because it's a safe and quiet block," he said.

The investigation into the double shooting is ongoing.
