Cuomo Could Be NYC's Next Mayor? Jewish Voters Ready to Rally Behind Him After Adams' Indictment

Andrew Cuomo, the former New York governor, is being considered by many Jewish voters as a potential replacement for Mayor Eric Adams, who is facing corruption charges. Jewish activists have expressed their support for Cuomo, highlighting his moderate views, history with the Jewish community, and strong support for Israel. They believe Cuomo would be a strong contender for the mayoral seat, especially within the Jewish community, which makes up a significant portion of the Democratic primary vote.

The Jewish community is very anxious for Cuomo to jump into the race. A lot of us will jump in for him,” said a Jewish organizer who requested anonymity, adding he has discussed a candidacy with Cuomo.

However, Cuomo's own tarnished legacy, stemming from sexual harassment allegations and controversial decisions during the COVID-19 pandemic, poses a challenge. He resigned from his governorship in 2021 under the threat of impeachment, although he denied any wrongdoing. Nevertheless, he faced withering criticism for his handling of the pandemic and the nursing home crisis.

Some Jewish leaders, though, remain loyal to Mayor Adams. “I’m sticking with the mayor right now. Adams has done a yeoman’s job, ” said Rabbi Mendy Miroznik, president of the Staten Island Council of Jewish Organizations.

Other Democratic candidates for mayor, considered too far to the left by many Jewish voters, are also vying for the position. City Comptroller Brad Lander, the city's highest-ranking Jewish elected official, is facing criticism for his support of Rep. Jamaal Bowman, a major foe of Israel.

Cuomo has yet to formally declare his candidacy, but with Adams facing significant political pressure, the possibility of Cuomo's return to New York politics is a hot topic. Only time will tell if he will take the leap and challenge for the city's top seat.
