Columbia Medical School Receives Record $400 Million Donation Amidst Controversy
Columbia University's medical school announced a record-breaking $400 million donation from one of its graduates, P. Roy Vagelos, and his wife Diana. This gift comes at a critical time for the university, which faced significant backlash and protests over its handling of pro-Palestinian demonstrations during the last school year.
The donation, the largest in the medical school's history, will be used to expand biomedical research at the school, which was previously named after the Vageloses following a $250 million donation in 2017.
The university's handling of the protests led some major donors to pause their contributions, including Robert K. Kraft, the New England Patriots owner, who said he was "deeply saddened at the virulent hate that continues to grow on campus and throughout our country." The Russell Berrie Foundation, which had donated $86 million to Columbia over the years, also suspended its gifts.
While the university's president, Nemat Shafik, stepped down from her job last week, the medical school's chief executive, Dr. Katrina Armstrong, emphasized that the Vageloses' donation is focused on driving scientific progress and impact, not on the recent controversies.
The Vageloses have been consistent supporters of Columbia, with their total donations exceeding $900 million, making them the most generous donors in the university's history.
Despite the recent challenges, Columbia's medical school remains committed to its mission, fueled by the generous support of its benefactors.
