Chinese Spy Uncovered in NYC: Accused of Spying for Beijing on Pro-Democracy Groups

Yuanjun Tang, a 67-year-old naturalized US citizen residing in Queens, NY, has been arrested and charged with acting as an unregistered agent for the Chinese government. Federal prosecutors allege that Tang, a former Chinese dissident who defected to Taiwan in 2002 and later sought asylum in the US, has been secretly working for China's Ministry of State Security (MSS) since 2018.

Tang, who had previously protested against the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), is accused of spying on pro-democracy activist groups in the US, providing information about their activities to the Chinese government. Authorities say he met with MSS intelligence officers on at least three occasions and even helped them join encrypted messaging platforms used by dissidents.

During the investigation, federal agents recovered instructions Tang had received from the MSS, including photographs, videos, and documents. They also discovered Tang had lied to the FBI about his ability to access an email account he used to communicate with his MSS handler.

Tang is facing three charges, including conspiring to act as an agent of a foreign government, acting as an agent of a foreign government, and making false statements. Each charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. The FBI is continuing to investigate this case.

This arrest highlights the ongoing threat of foreign espionage and the importance of protecting national security. It serves as a reminder that even those who have sought refuge in the US can pose a threat to our country.
