Chinatown Tragedy: Double Fatality After Car Strikes Cyclist and Pedestrian
A devastating accident in Manhattan's Chinatown left a cyclist and a pedestrian dead on Saturday morning. Two women, ages 22 and 23, driving a Chevy Malibu, were arrested after attempting to flee the scene.
The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. near Canal Street and Bowery. The car, exiting the Manhattan Bridge, jumped the curb, striking both the cyclist (a man in his 30s) and the pedestrian (a woman in her 60s). The vehicle continued its destructive path, crashing into a parked police van before coming to a stop.
A witness recounted confronting the drivers, preventing their immediate escape. Police quickly apprehended the two women, who were taken to Bellevue Hospital for evaluation. Charges are pending.
The NYPD is investigating the cause of the accident. The intersection, known for its pedestrian and cyclist traffic, is currently under scrutiny. This incident highlights the ongoing concerns about traffic safety and pedestrian fatalities in NYC.
