Central Park Music Festival Under Fire: $620K in Damages Spark Ban Calls

Central Park Festival Faces Ban Calls After $620K in Damages

The Global Citizens Festival, a star-studded annual concert in Central Park, is facing calls to be banned after causing over $620,000 in damages to the Great Lawn last year. City Council Member Gale Brewer, a vocal critic of the event, has written to Mayor Eric Adams, requesting the festival be moved to a different location.

Brewer claims the festival disrupts foot traffic, generates noise pollution, and necessitates a two-week closure of the Great Lawn for setup and cleanup. The 2024 festival, which featured performances by Post Malone, Doja Cat, BLACKPINK, and others, drew 60,000 attendees despite rainy conditions.

The festival’s organizers have acknowledged past damages, stating that they always pay for repairs. However, they maintain that the damage from this year’s event was minimal compared to 2023, citing precautions taken, including additional flooring, pre-seeding, and weather management plans.

Brewer also expresses concern that very little of the festival’s charitable grants are allocated to nonprofits in New York City. She suggests moving the festival to a stadium or arena to minimize disruption and environmental impact on the park.

Mayor Adams' Response?

Mayor Adams, who previously expressed concerns about damage to park lawns from the festival, has yet to respond to Brewer’s request. In the past, he has stated that all parks should be shared and that no one park is better than the others.

Central Park: A Beloved Green Space

Central Park, managed by the Central Park Conservancy, is a treasured green space for New Yorkers and visitors alike. The Great Lawn is a popular destination for recreation, relaxation, and community gatherings. The annual closure of the Great Lawn for the Global Citizen Festival has been met with criticism from some who believe the park’s resources should be used for all New Yorkers, not just for a one-day event.
