A-List Stars Rally to Save Elizabeth Street Garden
The fight to preserve a beloved community garden in the heart of Manhattan has gained the support of some big names in the entertainment industry. Robert De Niro, Patti Smith, and Martin Scorsese have all penned heartfelt letters to Mayor Eric Adams, urging him to reconsider plans to demolish the Elizabeth Street Garden to make way for affordable housing for seniors.
The garden, known for its vibrant programming that includes music events, movie nights, and group classes, is a beloved community gathering spot. However, the city owns the property and plans to sell it to a developer who will build a housing complex that will include 50 units for homeless seniors.
While the city insists the garden's demolition is necessary to address the city's housing crisis, many residents are opposed to the plan, arguing that it's a trade-off that benefits few while sacrificing a valuable community resource.
Celebrities Speak Out
Scorsese, a longtime New Yorker, wrote to Adams, reminiscing about his childhood in Little Italy and highlighting the need for green spaces in urban neighborhoods. He called the demolition "a sad development for the neighborhood and for the city."
Smith, in her letter, emphasized the garden's unique role as a sanctuary for art, nature, literature, and activism. She highlighted the importance of affordable housing but argued that it shouldn't come at the cost of greenspaces.
City Remains Unswayed
Despite the celebrity endorsements, the city's housing commissioner, Adolfo Carrión Jr., stated that the letters won't change the city's plans. He said the letter writers "don’t have the whole context of the history of the site, let alone the understanding of the crisis that we’re facing."
The garden's fate remains uncertain as the demolition date, September 10th, approaches. The community continues to fight to save their beloved green space, hoping that the outcry will ultimately sway the city's decision.
