Brooklyn Mourns Subway Burning Victim
A vigil was held in Brooklyn for Debrina Kawam, the 57-year-old woman tragically set on fire on a subway in December. The memorial, held at First Baptist Church in Sheepshead Bay, highlighted Kawam's life as a student, bubbly cheerleader, and a woman who loved to travel. Community leaders expressed outrage at the city's failure to protect her, both in life and in death.
The Tragedy
The incident occurred near the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue subway station. Police allege that Sebastian Zapeta, 33, sprayed Kawam with a liquid and ignited it with a lighter, then watched her burn. Zapeta faces murder and arson charges and could face life in prison. He claims he doesn't remember the event due to intoxication.
Community Response
The vigil was a testament to Kawam's life and the community's grief. Attendees shared stories of her kindness and outgoing personality. Following this tragedy, clergy in Brooklyn will now be patrolling the subway system with the Guardian Angels.
