Professional soccer is making its mark in Brooklyn with the launch of Brooklyn Football Club (FC), a new club that's entering the already competitive soccer landscape of New York City.

Women's Team Takes the Field

The club's women's team kicked off their season earlier this month, becoming an original franchise in the USL Super League. This eight-team league sits just below the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) in the hierarchy of U.S. women's soccer.

Men's Team to Follow

Brooklyn FC's men's team will join the second-tier USL Championship as an expansion team in March 2025. The club's ambitious vision, formed in early 2022, is fueled by a “if not now, never” mentality, according to president Matt Rizzetta.

A Focus on Brooklyn

The team's colors are “brownstone” and “limestone”, a nod to the iconic Brooklyn Bridge, and the logo is a capital B that pays homage to the Brooklyn Dodgers. The club's backers believe the borough's international appeal and diverse culture will make it a hotbed for soccer fans.

Growing Pains

Like any new venture, Brooklyn FC has faced its share of challenges, including a delay in the hiring of their women's team's head coach due to visa issues. The team also had to postpone their home opener at Coney Island's Maimonides Park due to damage to the turf during installation. Their home games this fall will be played at Columbia University's soccer stadium in Manhattan.

A Promising Future

Despite the setbacks, Brooklyn FC remains optimistic about the future. The women's team is off to a strong start, and the club has attracted a number of talented players, including some with experience in the NWSL. The club also has the backing of soccer star Timothy Weah, who was born in Brooklyn.

Embracing the Brooklyn Spirit

Brooklyn FC's approach is firmly rooted in the borough's spirit: hard work, resilience, and a desire to build something special. The club's owners believe there is a huge appetite for soccer in Brooklyn, and they are committed to bringing a high-quality product to the field.

“The thing that I’m most excited about is they’re gonna see the birth of something,” said defender Sam Rosette. “This is going to be the first time for everyone, and you get to see that happen in real time, which is so exciting.”
