Bronx's "Junkie Wasteland": A Congressman's Scathing Critique

Rep. Ritchie Torres is sharply criticizing Governor Kathy Hochul's handling of a major open-air drug market in the South Bronx, dubbed "The Hub." This area, located between Melrose and Mott Haven avenues, has become a haven for drug use and associated issues despite previous city efforts to clean it up.

Torres, in a letter to Hochul and Mayor Adams, argues that the state's approach is "passive" and calls for stricter measures. He specifically advocates for changes to bail laws and evidence-discovery laws, and greater authority for the city to involuntarily commit individuals with severe mental illness and addiction.

He points out the devastating impact on residents, who witness open drug use daily, including in front of children. Torres highlights the issue of recidivism, emphasizing the need for a long-term solution that permanently removes the open-air drug market.

Hochul's spokesperson responded, criticizing Torres' past stances on NYPD funding and suggesting that Hochul is actively working to improve involuntary commitment standards and address repeat offenders.

Mayor Adams, in his recent State of the City address, also pledged to address the mental health and homelessness crisis contributing to the problem, proposing a five-year plan including a new treatment facility.

The situation remains a pressing concern, underscoring the complex interplay between state and city policies in addressing the multifaceted issue of drug addiction and public safety in NYC.
