Bronx Apartment Fire Leaves 200 Homeless in Freezing Temperatures

Bronx Fire Leaves Hundreds Displaced in Freezing Temperatures

A devastating five-alarm fire ripped through a six-story Bronx apartment building on Wallace Avenue early Friday morning, leaving seven people injured and over 200 residents displaced. Strong winds fueled the blaze, making it incredibly difficult for firefighters to contain the inferno.

Mayor Eric Adams and FDNY Commissioner Ben Tucker described the fire as "massive" and "wind-driven," highlighting the challenging conditions faced by firefighters. The top floor and roof sustained significant damage. Five firefighters and two residents suffered minor injuries.

Residents Facing Hardship

Many residents escaped with only the clothes on their backs, facing frigid temperatures and the loss of their homes and belongings. The Red Cross is assisting the displaced families, registering over 81 families (202 people) at P.S. 76.

One resident, Jarixa Guzman, a mother of four, lost her cats in the fire. Another resident, Nicole Novoa, reported a lack of heat in the building for approximately three years, suggesting the potential role of space heaters in the fire's spread.

Landlord Under Scrutiny

Approximately 70 311 complaints regarding lack of heat and hot water at the building since October 2024 have been reported. Landlord Ved Parkash is withholding comment pending the fire investigation. This isn't the first time Parkash's buildings have faced tenant complaints.

The official cause of the fire is still under investigation. The incident underscores the urgent need for improved building safety measures and responsiveness to tenant complaints in the city.
