Bodycam Footage Released: NYPD Shooting on Brooklyn Subway Platform Sparks Outrage

Bodycam Footage Released of Brooklyn Subway Shooting, Sparking Outrage

The NYPD has released body-worn camera footage of a shooting that occurred at a Brooklyn subway station last weekend. The incident, which began as a confrontation between police and a man accused of fare evasion, resulted in the shooting of the suspect, a police officer, and two bystanders.

The incident: The shooting took place on Sunday afternoon at a Brownsville subway stop. According to police, the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Derrell Mickles, allegedly went after officers with a knife after they attempted to apprehend him for fare evasion. Two officers opened fire, hitting Mickles several times. Two bystanders, a 49-year-old man named Gregory Delpeche and a 26-year-old woman, were also injured. Delpeche was hit in the head and remained in critical condition as of Tuesday, while the woman suffered a graze wound. A police officer was also shot in the armpit.

Protests and criticism: The shooting has sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability. On Wednesday, a large protest was held in Brownsville, where nearly 20 people were arrested for condemning the actions of the officers. Critics have accused the NYPD of using excessive force and failing to de-escalate the situation.

Mayor Adams defends officers: New York City Mayor Eric Adams, however, defended the officers' actions, stating that they acted with discipline and tried to de-escalate the situation as much as possible. He acknowledged that while it is ideal for officers to never fire their weapons on a subway, it is not always realistic.

Footage released: The bodycam footage, which has been released to the public, shows officers attempting to subdue Mickles with Tasers before firing their weapons. The footage also shows Mickles wielding a knife, which was later recovered from the crime scene.

Ongoing investigation: The incident remains under investigation. The family of Gregory Delpeche is reviewing the bodycam footage with their attorney and has called for a thorough investigation into the shooting.
