Anthony Weiner's Controversial NYC Council Run: A Political Comeback?

Anthony Weiner's Controversial Bid for NYC Council

Anthony Weiner, the disgraced former congressman, has officially filed to run for the New York City Council. This shocking move comes over a decade after his sexting scandal led to his resignation and a criminal conviction for sexting a minor. He served 18 months in prison and was released in 2019.
Weiner is targeting the open Council District 2 seat, currently held by the term-limited Carlina Rivera. He faces competition from several other candidates including Sarah Batchu, Harvey D Epstein, Andrea Gordillo, Jason Murillo and Allison Ryan. The district encompasses several Lower Manhattan neighborhoods.
While claiming his candidacy is exploratory, Weiner has already secured a speaking engagement at a Downtown Independent Democrats forum. He has also registered his political committee, "Weiner 25", with the Campaign Finance Board.
This isn't Weiner's first attempt at a political comeback. In 2013, he ran for mayor of New York City before another sexting scandal derailed his campaign. This latest bid is sure to generate significant controversy and media attention.
