Amtrak's Aging Infrastructure: A Century-Old Problem Causing Delays in NYC

This summer, commuters have been frustrated by a string of train delays along the Northeast Corridor, with the most dramatic event being the explosion of a critical circuit breaker near Midtown Manhattan. The incident highlighted the vulnerability of Amtrak's aging infrastructure, much of which dates back to the early 20th century.

A System Steeped in History

Amtrak inherited the electrical system and tracks from the Pennsylvania Railroad, which first electrified the Northeast Corridor in the 1920s. This outdated technology, including the use of 25 hertz electricity instead of the modern 60 hertz standard, has led to frequent breakdowns and costly repairs. Amtrak has been forced to cannibalize old substations for parts, further delaying repairs.

The Northeast Corridor: A Rusty Chain

The electrical wires hanging above the tracks, known as catenary, are also a century old and often sag, particularly in hot weather. This can cause trains to break the wires, leading to lengthy delays. In May alone, four incidents involving overhead wires caused significant disruptions.

A Costly Modernization

While Amtrak has been receiving increased funding from the recent infrastructure bill, a complete overhaul of the Northeast Corridor will be a massive undertaking, estimated to cost $100 billion over the next 13 years. This includes projects like the Gateway tunnel project, which aims to add two new tracks under the Hudson River, but even that is not expected to be completed until 2035.

A Urgent Need for Action

New Jersey officials are urging Amtrak to abandon the piecemeal approach to modernization and invest in a comprehensive upgrade of the aging infrastructure. The outdated system not only causes delays for Amtrak passengers, but also impacts commuters on New Jersey Transit, which shares tracks and platforms with Amtrak.

Until significant investments are made in updating the infrastructure, commuters along the Northeast Corridor can expect ongoing delays and disruptions.
