Thankfully, no injuries were reported. American Airlines stated the aircraft landed safely and will undergo maintenance inspection.
One passenger, Amy Stamper, recounted her experience to the New York Post: "I was scared. I thought I was going to die. There were a couple of small explosions. And there was a fire." Another passenger described the event as similar to a car backfiring. Flight attendants are praised for their professionalism in comforting distressed passengers.
The flight is scheduled to depart for Charlotte on Friday morning. Passengers were provided with hotel accommodations.
The Federal Aviation Administration is currently investigating the incident.
