Wegmans confirms it will open on the Upper West Side at 1932 Broadway, but there's still no date
After more than two years of signs on a dark storefront at West 64th and 65th streets, the grocer says it is designing the store and pulling permits. It would be Wegmans' second Manhattan location, after Astor Place.

- Wegmans told West Side Rag it is designing a store and obtaining permits for 1932 Broadway, between West 64th and 65th streets; asked if that means it will open, a spokesperson said yes, with no timeline yet.
- The space is the former Bed Bath & Beyond. Wegmans signs went up in June 2024, but the storefront has stayed dark since.
- A long-term lease for about 58,900 square feet was signed in February 2024, according to I Love the Upper West Side, citing Wegmans.
- It would be the Rochester-based chain's second Manhattan store, after the 87,000-square-foot Astor Place location that opened in October 2023, the New York Post reported.
- Neighbors online are skeptical about the timing and worried about traffic; the Post noted it is unknown whether the store will use the biometric notices posted at Astor Place.
The Upper West Side's longest-running grocery mystery has an answer, if not a date. Wegmans will open a store at 1932 Broadway, between West 64th and 65th streets in Lincoln Square, a company spokesperson confirmed to West Side Rag on Tuesday, Oct. 27.
"We can confirm that we are currently designing a store and obtaining the necessary permits for our 1932 Broadway location," spokesperson Mandee Puleo told the Rag, adding that the opening timeline is yet to be determined. Asked whether that meant the store is expected to open, she answered: "Yes. Just no timeline yet." The Rag said it reached out after a reader heard from employees at another Wegmans that the Lincoln Square store would finally open.
Two years of signs, no store
The space was home to Bed Bath & Beyond, which closed in early 2023 during the chain's store cuts and bankruptcy, the New York Post reported. Wegmans signs went up in June 2024, but the storefront has shown no obvious signs of life since. A long-term lease for about 58,900 square feet was signed in February 2024, according to I Love the Upper West Side, which quoted a Wegmans statement.
As recently as February, the company would only say it remained focused on its Astor Place store. Wegmans has explained that it first tried to lease 1932 Broadway from the landlord, Glenwood; when that fell through it signed at Astor Place, and by the time the Broadway space became available again it was busy getting Astor Place designed and open.
What it would mean
- Second Manhattan store: The Rochester-based chain opened its first Manhattan location, about 87,000 square feet at 770 Broadway in Astor Place, in October 2023, the Post reported.
- No date: Wegmans has not said when construction will finish or when the store will open. Treat any date you see online as a guess until the company announces one.
- Neighbors' reactions: Social media users quoted by the Post were skeptical about the timeline, and some worried about crowds and traffic on that stretch of Broadway.
- Biometrics: The Astor Place store has faced backlash over posted notices that it may collect biometric information such as facial recognition data, the Post reported; it is unknown whether the Upper West Side store will use the same systems. I Love the Upper West Side said Wegmans did not answer that question when it asked in January.
